You did it!

We just sent $10,000 to continue the construction of the Nwamitwa Community Center. The site is completely prepared and the architects’ plans are ready. We just started with the excavations for the foundation – and the training of the community builders. It’s an exciting time as we help to empower a community with the building of a new community center based on the “Etafeni model” we have loved and supported for years.

A recent update from our people on the ground in South Africa brings great news! “The project is going beautifully, with full involvement from the community. I think there has been more local contribution than outside funding. Just great!”

Read about our continued support of Etafeni, and this new community center modeled after it here.

Visit the Valoyi Traditional Authority who acts as the traditional governing body of the community. Their mission is “To provide services and leadership to the community and call upon all subjects to participate in the upliftment of the Valoyi Clan, while maintaining and inculcating cultural ethos.” We couldn’t agree more, and your efforts to help have paid off!

More updates soon, but visit their website here.

Help Raise $35,000 :: Help Build a School in Malawi!

Casey Fictum and other campus coordinators from DePaul University have created a fundraising campaign called the Kids of Malawi Project (KOMP) and partnered directly with campus coordinators at the Atlantic College in Wales, as well as the entire EOAF network. DoSomething.org is also helping to promote this project!

The Kids of Malawi Project (KOMP), in partnership with Build-On, is sponsoring the construction of a new schoolhouse for a remote village in Malawi. Every donation adds more pieces to the puzzles. Each puzzle represents a portion of the school needed to finish construction. For example, one puzzle represents the BRICKS, another the BOARDS, etc.

Every puzzle piece will feature the signature of a donor, and once a puzzle is complete it will be on display to celebrate reaching one of the goals. Once all of the puzzles are pieced together, we will have reached our OVERALL goal – to build a school for the children of Malawi.

The school will provide more than 300 children with a stable location to be educated and discover their learning potential. Members of KOMP will travel to Africa to assist with the building project and to interact with the school’s community.

Haiti has been devastated by powerful earthquakes. In the true spirit of Ubuntu, Eyes on Africa felt drawn to leverage its base of support in an effort to help those affected by this disaster. Thousands of Haitians are in direct need of simple basics such as clean water and food. We want to do our share in helping our neighbors in their hour of need. Thanks to the support of select Advantage suppliers, you can help by purchasing specific brands of wine. Proceeds of every case sold are donated to Eyes on Africa’s relief efforts.

We have teamed up “Helps International” to provide food and shelter as well as water purification systems for clean drinking water. Join us. Direct your purchases to help those in need so that we may bring some relief to those in such immediate need.

At the end of April, Eyes on Africa Helps Haiti will donate its funds. So, you only have three months to purchase these brands with proceeds going to help those in need.

Pass on this unique opportunity. Every bit helps. Listed below are program details and supporting locations.

Timing of Program: Feb-April
Cause: Haiti Relief
Idea: For every case sold, proceeds will be donated to the relief efforts. Support is for selected brands only.
How to Help: Look at the chart below. Find your state (many are Nationwide), buy those specific brands. The money is automatically donated to Eyes on Africa Helps Haiti and Helps International.
Wine tasting: If you would like to set up a wine tasting to benefit Haiti, please contact Jeff Lakusta at jlakusta@eyesonafricafoundation.org

Thanks to the generosity of the Senior Class Council and Father Poorman, the proceeds of the senior class press box dinner went to benefit the Eyes on Africa Foundation. The press box dinner two years ago was one of EOAF’s very first fundraisers, and it means so much to be able to return having accomplished so much. I am so lucky to be able to share this incredible night with friends and classmates who have been so influential in starting and sustaining EOAF. Thank you!
